Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) June 4, 2008 -- Smith's Food & Drug Stores has released its first annual online Report to the Community highlighting donations of $6.6 million of cash and in kind donations to more than 2,700 non-profit organizations in 2007.

The Smith's Food & Drug Report to the Community is available as an Adobe Acrobat.pdf file and can accessed online at www.smithscommunity.com.

Smith's charitable giving program known as "Neighbor to Neighbor" provided average donations of nearly $50,000 per store location throughout Smith's seven western states of operation (Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona). The support also includes contributions from the Kroger Foundation (Smith's parent company), suppliers, associates and customers through in-store fundraising promotions.

The commitment of Smith's to the communities it serves focuses on four key areas:

  • Hunger Relief - support for local food drives to stock community pantry shelves, purchasing vehicles and trailers; providing food backpacks to low income children
  • K-12 Education - $1 million in unrestricted funds given through the Earn & Learn program to local schools in participating areas; additional product contributions and gift card fundraising programs for schools in other areas
  • Women's Health - major sponsor of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and supporter of American Cancer Society Quality of Life program
  • Grassroots Support - largest corporate donor to Primary Children's Medical Center; funding United Way and American Red Cross disaster relief effort.

"Smith's has a long-standing tradition of investing in our communities through charitable giving to organizations our customers care about," said Jim Hallsey, Smith's president. "We recognize the value and importance of the positive role we play in communities where our 13,000 associates live and work."

From its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah, Smith's operates a total of 132 stores throughout seven western states. Smith's is a division of the Kroger Co (NYSE:KR) whose partnership with local food banks across the country resulted in Kroger being named America's Second Harvest Retailer of the Year for the fifth time in seven years.
